Rev. Ed Townley This Sunday
12/03/17

REV. ED TOWNLEY
is a part of the Unity in the City ministerial team; he leads our Sunday services twice each month.  One of the most in-demand speakers in the Unity movement, Rev. Ed is known for his enthusiastic metaphysical approach to the Bible, and for his understanding of the Hero's Journey as a roadmap for our individual spiritual unfoldment. His most recent book, Kingdom Come: A Guide to the Book of Revelation was published in 2012 by Unity Books. He is also the author of The Secret According to Jesus, a guide to the Sermon on the Mount. He answers Bible questions submitted to the international Unity website.

Rev. Ed's Reflections

Dear Friends,
The traditional theme for the First Sunday in Advent is Hope, so let’s consider that this week.

I’m actually a little ambivalent about hope as a spiritual quality, because it carries within it seeds of doubt.  If I hope for a positive outcome, I am a little fearful that it might not happen.  Those little seeds of negative energy can be very pernicious; they can accumulate in consciousness and ultimately become a big wall of fear!

On the other hand, hope can sometimes be an essential light in a dark experience.  Do you know Emily Dickinson’s description?

”Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all.”

So hope is the pure, constant voice that knows that we are more than our limited bodies, more than our conflicted minds, and certainly more than anything dark and negative we may experience.  Hope is not specific—it works without the words to describe a situation—it is simply Knowing.  So it is a perfect beginning to an Advent season that is preparing us to give birth of a greater expression of our Selves. I hope you’ll join us this Sunday at 11:00 a.m. as we begin together the four-week adventure of Advent.
Blessings!
