Rev. Ed's Reflections
Dear Friends,
“’I believe; help my unbelief!’”
This passionate statement from Mark (9:24) has been much on my mind this week as I observe the reactions and counter-reactions to the tragic events in Charlottesville last weekend.
Do we or do we not believe the five principles of spiritual Truth we affirm together each Sunday? Of course we do! Lord, we believe! Do we find it profoundly challenging to maintain that faith as the events of the week unfold? I can’t speak for you, but I certainly do! So Lord, help my unbelief!
It seems to me that we are here, spiritual Beings in human form, to negotiate a tricky transition in consciousness from belief in obedience as our ultimate purpose to a belief in Love as our greatest experience and expression. And as I said last Sunday, Love (capitalized) is simply another, more universal word for God. We may variously regard God as a Being of demands, judgment and punishment. Love, among all peoples, suggests a quality of softness, appreciation—and remarkable strength.
The challenge, then, is to resist temptations to ‘justifiable’ outrage, angry opinions, and profound indignation, focused instead on universal spiritual principle. The temptations are everywhere—in the news, online, among even the best-intentioned of quiet discussions. Lovingly standing firm against all that energy is a tall order.
Can we do it? Well, my friends, if not us, who? We are uniquely situated between belief and unbelief. It’s frequently a painful place to be. And yet it’s a place that perfectly defines our spiritual purpose. Remember—we didn’t sign on for an easy part of the journey!
Blessing's,
Rev. Ed
