REV. LAURA DERR
received ordination through All Faiths Seminary International in 2016. She is a psychologist who has been in clinical practice in the Boston area for 30 years. While in grad school, she started a 20-year practice of Buddhism with Thich Nhat Hanh, and received ordination as a lay member of the community. She began reading A Course In Miracles ten years ago, which is closer to Buddhism than Christianity. it was instantly clear to her that Jesus is her personal teacher and that his Course was the connecting link between her Christian childhood and adult Buddhist practice. She has studied his teachings in The Way of Mastery, which connects her psychological and spiritual practices, and she has gone through the intimate experience of his teachings in A Course of Love. Through her practice with these three modern teachings of Jesus, her intuitive gift has flowered in richness and clarity. She has been drawn to the deeper meanings of the original Aramaic Lord’s Prayer and Beatitudes, which she has set to music. She has begun leading healing workshops using these teachings, joining her clinical and spiritual paths.

Dear Unity in the City Church Family

Rev. Carlos asked me to share this message and photo with you. On his way home from church on Sunday the 9th, there was a snow squall. He hit a patch of black ice and lost control of his car.

Miraculously, and through the grace of God, Rev. Carlos survived. Even more remarkably, throughout his recovery since, he has been overflowing with gratitude and and joy. He plans to be back at Unity in the City very soon.

While he has multiple physical injuries - a fractured jaw that they'll wire together today, 5 fractured ribs, a fractured occipital bone at the base of the skull, a broken collarbone, and some small head lacerations - Rev. Carlos's spirit is strong.

Rev. Carlos is treating the accident and having survived it as a blessing, a gift from God. When he sent me his list of injuries, he followed it with "How blessed am I? Blessed beyond measure!!!!!!!"

Recently he told me, "Please feel free to forward the photo of my car to members of our church so that we may all rejoice together at the goodness of our God! ... I'm looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks. Yay God!!!"

Rev. Carlos was able to come home from the hospital in just 3 days! A week ago, they wired his jaw shut so that it can heal properly. Happily, he can still talk :)

Last Sunday morning, Rev. Carlos asked me to tell the congregation "Just let them know that I love them so. My body is fractured but my spirit is unbroken! It's the best day ever!!! And I will not change my mind!"

As recently as yesterday, Rev. Carlos had hoped to be able to come preach this Sunday. But his doctor said his fractured occipital bone needed a bit more time to heal.

Or, to quote Rev. Carlos "I’m just home now from my appointment with one of my surgeons, who refused to give me a green light for making a car trip to Brookline this coming Sunday. Timothy was prepared to be my driver and we were excited to show everyone my progress. My surgeon doesn’t want me traveling by car for longer than 30-40 minutes at a time maximum until my occipital bone is healed enough for my neck brace to be removed which she estimates to be possibly Tuesday. This is the fracture above the others that is the most fragile being so near the spinal cords. [My surgeon said,] “Not a risk we want to take by any means, nor for any reason.”

Rev. Carlos will once again grace us with his presence in two short weeks. We can't wait !!!

With all my Love -

Rolly
